The composer, performer, and philosopher Pauline Oliveros (1932–2016) developed a poetic method she named “deep listening.” She wrote: “Deep has to do with complexity, boundaries, or edges beyond ordinary or habitual understandings… The level of awareness of soundscape brought about by deep listening can lead to the possibility of shaping chaotic sounds of technology and of urban environments and machinery.” This class features a sequence of readings, listening assignments, and a writing exercise that can provide pathways for suggesting lyric intimacy and attunement along the edges of experience in sound-space.
