Announcing the Spring 2019 Reading & Lecture Series

We're delighted to announce the Spring 2019 Reading & Lecture Series! We're going to be hosting a full lineup of world-class poets, so mark your calendars now!

We’ll enjoy poetry readings featuring Kiki Petrosino (January 31), Natalie Shapero (March 4), Naomi Shihab Nye (April 18); Myriam Moscana, with translation by Jen Hofer and John Pluecker (February 28); and prose readings from Nicole Walker (January 24) and Cherríe Moraga (April 11).

Readings as part of the Art for Justice Project are in full swing, and this spring we're featuring four poets across three nights. Nikky Finney (February 7), Patrick Rosal and Evie Shockley (March 21), and Natalie Diaz (April 4) will be presenting all new work that addresses issues of mass incarceration in the United States.

Our Hannelore Quander-Rattee Works-in-Translation Reading this year features Daniel Borzutzky (January 10), author of The Performance of Becoming Human, recipient of the 2016 National Book Award for Poetry, along with many other titles. We also have a new named reading, the Tom Sanders Memorial Reading, which features writers connected to the University of Arizona. This year's readers are Peggy Shumaker and Maurya Simon (February 21).

Our spring resident, Rigoberto Gonzalez, will present a reading (April 25) as part of his extended stay in Tucson. Rigoberto González is the author of four books of poetry, most recently Unpeopled Eden, which won the Lambda Literary Award and the Lenore Marshall Prize from the Academy of American Poets.

In addition to this Tucson programming we will also offer two readings in Phoenix as part of our ongoing partnership with the Phoenix Art Museum: on Wednesday, 2/6, Nikky Finney will read, and on Wednesday, 4/17, Naomi Shihab Nye will visit Phoenix to read from her poetry.

So much gratitude to our co-sponsors, and to you and you and you for coming to hear these remarkable poets. We hope to see you this fall at the Poetry Center!
