Writer, Buddhist, and bioregionalist Gary Snyder was born in San Francisco in 1930. He has published 18 books of poetry and prose including Turtle Island (Pulitzer Prize, 1975), Mountains and Rivers Without End (Bollingen Prize, 1997), and the influential essays of The Practice of the Wild (1990). He has been a logger, a forest firefighter, a lookout, a professor, and a Zen student in Japan. He lives in the Northern Sierra of California.
