Part of the Hidden Cinema of the Southwest and Mexico symposium

Hidden Cinema of the Southwest and Mexico is a symposium with two nights of screenings focusing on how and why amateur, industrial, educational, and independent filmmakers have represented the American Southwest and Mexico. Tonight’s screening of A Line in the Sand at the Poetry Center is the opening event of the symposium.

A Line in the Sand is a 35-minute documentary set in one of America’s final frontiers: Arivaca, Arizona. Citizens of Arivaca have had a front row seat to the failed Project 28 spy towers, the ongoing immigration debates, and the consolidation of the drug cartels. The film examines the issue of border traffic from both sides of the fence and illustrates how government intervention has impacted life in both the United States and Mexico, all the while unifying a small town at the edge of America.
