This class begins with a love affair and ends with a bang. The love affair is, of course, the impassioned relationship a poet develops with words: their sounds, their sensual textures, the knotty heft of each consonant, the shape of each letter on the page. After an initial conversation attuning students to the pleasures of language and a discussion of some particularly alluring poems, this class proceeds through a series of exercises and experiments until students arrive—bang!—at an original poem, composed using generative strategies that reconnect the writing process with its deeply embodied impulses and thwart writer’s block.
