Writing Your Gods and Demons

Four meetings, Mondays and Thursdays: July 8, 11, 15, and 18, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

In this generative poetry class, we will explore various modes of writing to encounter, express, or exorcise mythic forces within each of us: the mother and father archetypes; imprisoned guilt, fear, and desire; and the deities, petty and grand, that reign in our personal pantheons. We will read ecstatic, contemplative, and confessional poems and essays by poet-seekers throughout history who examined the light and dark within themselves to find the thread linking them to the divine. Students will choose from numerous writing exercises that encourage confrontation, dialog, and reconciliation with the angels and devils that have joined them on their life journeys. Class time will be given to writing, discussing what we’ve read, philosophical inquiry, and optional sharing of work. The instructor will be available during office hours for individual conferences and critiques.
