Poetry Performance
Professional Development Workshop for 6-12 Teachers
Capialize on trends in spoken word and hip-hop to get your students excited about poetry.
Help your students master close reading and public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
Participants will develop, memorize, and perform a favorite poem from the National Poetry Out Loud anthology. Through this process, they will learn first-hand about the benefits, challenges, and process of guiding students to develop their own poetry performances of favorite poems.
Through the use of innovative arts integration learning activities, participants will especially find useful an opportunity to extand ELA standards-based learning and skills. This professional development will connect poetry performance to ELA lessons, providing a platform for the entire school year.
This workshop is based around the National Poetry Out Loud contest for high school students, but is general enough for all 6-12 grade teachers to benefits from and use in their classes.
Participating teachers will receive:
- Free resources including a DVD of their performance to share with students.
- A certificate for 8 hours of continuing education credit.
