One of the best ways to dismiss a poet’s work out of hand is to call their writing inaccessible. But what do we mean when we applaud accessibility in a poet’s work? This discussion will explore how assumptions about access, elitism, readability, and communication can hamper us from encountering some of poetry’s strongest qualities: its resistance to communicate in received ways, and its insistence on unique and protean methods of articulation.
