Poems by [Your Name Here]

This class offers you the chance to develop a body of work into a chapbook-length manuscript and then publish it. We’ll spend four weeks workshopping our poems, and then two weeks producing our chapbooks. We’ll explore the Poetry Center’s collection of chapbooks for inspiration, and discuss what it is that makes the chapbook unique. Craft issues we’ll tackle include: use of white space in chapbook manuscripts, uniformity or range of forms in chapbooks, the chapbook-length poem, and titles. We’ll also explore bookmaking styles, materials, and techniques. This class is for you if you already have a group of poems that you can imagine shaping into a 15–30 page manuscript. As our work will be in the final stages of revision, we’ll meet it on its own terms. This means workshops will be focused on fine-tuning; any major restructuring will be on the level of the whole manuscript, rather than poem by poem. You’ll have the option of binding an extra copy of your chapbook to be catalogued and housed in the Poetry Center’s archive. We’ll also create a chapbook-length anthology featuring poems we revise during the class.
