The Poem Sequence

Four Saturdays, January 31 through February 28 (no class on February 14)
11:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.
Registration: $170.00 + $5.00 course material fee = $175.00

In this workshop we will study the lyrical structure of poem sequences and create or revise a poem sequence of our own. A sequence is a long poem that combines shorter pieces by relying on association, juxtaposition, and connection rather than theme or narrative to create an organic poetic whole. As a lyric poem is a center of intensity in a single moment in time, the sequence is a single moment in time that is an intersection of many centers of intensity. We will look at examples of poem sequences by Adam Zagajewski, Fady Joudah, Alice Notley, and Alfonso D’Aquino. Each participant will also be engaged in the process of creating a poem sequence of 6 to 8 pages in length. Time will be given in the workshop for feedback to individual work.
