“Most of the time when I'm looking for inspiration and expansion, I'm reading in translation," award-winning poet, essayist, and translator Jane Hirschfield has said. Whether you are an aspiring poetry translator, or a writer looking for greater inspiration and expansion in your own poems, this class will introduce you to some of the basics of literary translation. Carefully chosen readings and exercises will give participants a greater understanding—and first-hand experience—of what it is that literary translators of poetry do when they write a translation in English alongside an existing poetic text in another language. We will use these techniques ourselves to practice your own translations and/or invigorate your own original writing, which will be shared and discussed! The class will be taught in English, and knowledge of another language is not required.
