A History of the Poetry Center

Spend time reading and discussing the literary figures who comprise the foundation of the Poetry Center’s past and vibrant present: Ruth Stephan, Jeremy Ingalls, Richard Shelton, and Alison Hawthorne-Deming. Read founding documents, explore the Center’s vast archives and rare book room, and develop a facility for how the Poetry Center works. By the end of this course, participants will lead their own 20 minute tour of the Poetry Center for a general audience and be ready to undertake the volunteer work of docents. Participants should have read The University of Arizona Poetry Center: Celebrating 50 Years before the start of class. (This book is available for free at the Poetry Center front desk). This course is designed for people who have applied and been accepted to the docent program. If you are interested in applying for the docent program, please email your cover letter and resume to Renee Angle at angler@email.arizona.edu on or before September 1.
