First meeting of Voices of Contemporary Women Poets with Joel Arthur

Meets Mondays, February 7 through April 4, 6:00 to 8:00 pm
(No class meeting on March 14)

In this literature class we’ll listen to the female voice in modern poetry, reading work by central figures of the latter twentieth century such as Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lucille Clifton, Louise Glück, Bernadette Mayer, Anne Waldman, Lyn Hejinian, Leslie Scalapino, Ai, and many others. We’ll explore the dynamism, urgency, and expansiveness that women poets have brought to contemporary literature, and talk about how gender might influence voice. To enrich our studies, we’ll delve into the Poetry Center’s digital archive to watch and listen to readings and recordings of the women poets we’ll encounter in this class.
