In this eight-week writing workshop, we will write short form theatrical pieces; specifically, monologues and ten-minute plays. Although the focus is on playwriting, the class will use playwriting as a jumping-off point to discuss craft questions—most particularly voice and dialogue—that are of relevance to all writers. We will look for intersections between poetry and other forms, and our readings will range from famous short plays by Edward Albee and Christopher Durang to more experimental forms such as Poets Theater and surrealist plays. We will read and perform our works in class (no acting experience required! It’s simply helpful and exciting to read plays out loud), and discuss avenues for getting a ten-minute play produced. Every student can expect to produce several monologues and at least one complete ten-minute play by the end of class.
