Director’s Choice is a series of virtual events presenting historic readings from the University of Arizona Poetry Center’s extensive audiovisual archive Voca, as selected by past and present leadership of the Center, including Gail Browne, Alison Hawthorne Deming, Tyler Meier, and Frances Sjoberg. As part of the lead up to our celebration of the Poetry Center's 60th anniversary, join us online for these live, free listening parties featuring one reading from each decade of the Poetry Center's sixty years of existence. 

From the 2000s: Join us to watch a reading given by Sherwin Bitsui, Alberto Ríos, and Ofelia Zepeda on September 10th, 2010. Presented as a reading of Multilingual Poetry of the Southwest, this event featured each poet as well as the work of participant Natalia Toledo. The project brought together poets with fluency in five languages: English, Diné, Spanish, Tohono O’odham, and Zapotec. Each poet shared a poem of their own that was fifteen lines or less; each poet also translated from two other languages into another. The result was space that brought some of the many languages of the Poetry Center’s Tucson geography into thrilling proximity; each poem written for the project existed in three languages. Expert papermaker and book artist Karla Elling memorialized the work of the poets and collected the results in a handbound, letterpress edition with original linocuts titled Water: How We Are All Related.
