Join Winn Bundy and the Poetry Center on Sunday, May 19th, from 2pm-4pm to celebrate the naming of the Winifred J. Bundy room: formerly the librarian’s office and book receiving area at the Poetry Center. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Tyler Meier by Monday, May 13th: tmeier@email.arizona.edu or 520-626-5880.
We are excited to celebrate Winn Bundy’s nearly fifty-year commitment to advancing Southwest literature and Arizona writers and her nearly two decades of support on the Poetry Center’s Development Council.
Winn started the Singing Wind Bookshop in her Benson ranch home in 1974 because she believed that ranchers were great readers and buyers of books. A wonderfully unique place, Singing Wind Bookshop’s initial two small shelves have grown over time to twenty thousand volumes of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry stacked floor to ceiling. At her annual fiestas and other reading events emerging writers mingle with literary legends of the Southwest. School children on field trips, tourists from around the world, and neighbors throughout Southern Arizona all enjoy her warm and generous hospitality. Winn brings everyone together through her love of the book and belief in the power of the written word.
This naming at the Poetry Center is one of many gestures of appreciation Winn has received in the past decade. She’s the recipient of the prestigious 2015 Sharlot Hall Award, the 2009 Juliana Yoder Friend of the Humanities Award, and was named an Arizona Culture Keeper in 2012 as part of Arizona’s centennial celebration.
For residents of and visitors to Southern Arizona, Winn’s legacy as proprietor of Singing Wind is part of our shared cultural inheritance in this region. We hope you’ll come join us on May 19th as we celebrate with Winn at the Poetry Center. Free parking is available on the surface lots adjacent to the Poetry Center.
