Big Paper Beatnik Poems // Inside, Outside, In the Middle, Jazz Be Jazz Be

Tuesday, January 24, 2023 to Tuesday, April 4, 2023
A black and white painting by Juan Felipe Herrera

Juan Felipe Herrera, US Poet Laureate emeritus, continues to create in new mediums. Long recognized as an acclaimed poet, educator, community advocate, and theatre experimentalist, Juan Felipe has maintained a visual arts practice as a means to express and explore his creative projects and the world around him. This near daily practice has allowed him to navigate themes or borders, conflict, unity, and humanity, while also storyboarding collections and imagining new work while organizing his thoughts. Be it on the road as laureate, in his home studio, or within the Laureate Lab Visual Wordist Studio at Fresno State, Juan Felipe continues to create. Whether from cardboard, within journals, with found objects, or with large paper, ink, and bamboo brush, these are works that span decades and depict a liberation in movement, a freedom of improvisational flow from the heart into space.

This is a physical exhibit that will be displayed in the Jeremy Ingalls Gallery at the Poetry Center
