In this seminar we’ll explore the fragments of Sappho, Alkman, Diogenes, Archilochus, and others to return to the root of poesis: making. Through readings, discussion, and writing exercises we’ll discover how Simonides’ epitaphs, Homer’s extended descriptions, Catullus’s invectives, and even Basho’s images might renew our own poetic practices and enliven our thinking about what's possible in a poem. All levels of experience are welcome.
