On Tuesday, December 3, students at Imago Dei Middle School in Tucson joined U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón at Saguaro National Park East for the unveiling of a picnic table inscribed with "Cloud Song," a poem by Tohono O'odham writer, linguist, and University of Arizona Regents' Professor Ofelia Zepeda. During the hike to the table, located at the Mica View Picnic Area, students had a chance to meet Limón and ask her questions. At the site, a Tohono O'odham blessing was offered by Michael Enis, and Limòn read some of her own poems as well as Zepeda's "Cloud Songs." The event was part of "Poetry in Parks," Limón's signature project as poet laureate.
Imago Dei classroom teacher Frances Diaz offered this reflection on the experience:
"What an incredible experience we had with National Poet Laureate Ada Limón at Saguaro National Park! Our 6th grade language arts class feels an overwhelming sense of gratitude for being included in such a special event. From the moment we arrived, the beauty of the park and the excitement in the air set the stage for a memorable day.
Ada's words resonated deeply with us. She shared her passion for poetry and the importance of nature, connecting the vibrant landscape around us with the emotions and stories we can express through writing. We were captivated by her insights, and it sparked a new love for poetry within our hearts."
