Day of the Dead Memorial Reading

10/23/2014 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Honor the living spirits of those we have lost by giving voice to their poems and their legacies.

This event is an opportunity for interested community members to read a poem or other short excerpt from a poet who is no longer with us and to celebrate and remember their voice and poems. We will read outdoors in the Poetry Center odeum from a range of poets who passed away in the last academic year (from August 2013 to present).

Poets whose voices will be heard include Robert Peters, Maxine Kumin, Carolyn Kizer, Simin Behbahni, Maya Angelou, Juan Gelman, Allen Grossman, Amiri Baraka, Russell Edson, Natalya Gorbanevskaya, Seamus Heaney, Bill Knott, Madeline Gins, Wanda Coleman, Lusia Slomkowska, Maggie Estep, and Hillary Gravendyk. Our Tucsonan readers include (in order of appearance) Tony Luebbermann, Russ Kick, Laura Maher, Jos Charles, Lisa Cole, Tucson poet laureate Rebecca Seiferle, Nicki Navarro, Tere Fowler-Chapman, Cybele Knowles, Rita Magdaleno, Barrie Ryan, Hannah Ensor, Julie Lauterbach-Colby, Monica Durazo, Sat Bir Kaur Khalsa, Whitney Vale, and Sarah Kortemeier.

To express interest in giving voice to a recently-passed poet, please email Hannah Ensor at hensor@email.arizona.edu. Please, too, feel free to bring an offering for our community poets' altar.

Light refreshments will be served.
