2013 Professional Development Workshop

Capitalize on trends in spoken word and hip-hop to get your students excited about poetry.
Help your students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

July 15 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. & July 16 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Participants will develop, memorize and perform a favorite poem from the National Poetry Out Loud anthology. Through this process, they will learn first-hand about the benefits, challenges, and process of guiding students to develop their own poetry performances of favorite poems. Additionally, participants will develop and share their own lesson plans to help connect poetry performance to existing curriculum.This workshop is based around the National Poetry Out Loud Contest for high school students, but general enough for all 6-12 grade teachers to benefit from and use in their classes.

Benefits include:

$100 stipend for high school teachers planning to register and participate in the National Poetry Out Loud Program in 2013-2014.

Free resources including a DVD of your performance to share with students.

A certificate for 10 hours of continuing education credit for all participating teachers.

*Stipends are available on a first come first serve basis and will be distributed in the Fall.
