Funding a Residency

The national standard for Teaching Artist’s wages is $40-$50 per hour. While schools are often strapped for cash, there are several grants for which individual teachers can apply. Our “Catalogue for Teachers” lists grant opportunities we recommend. For the most part, the Poetry Center does not fund residencies, but works to serve as a facilitator between granting institutions, classroom teachers, and visiting writers in the schools to help promote the creative writing residency experience whenever possible.

Local Granting Organizations

Arizona Commission on the Arts

Schools and Organizations may apply for operating and project support through Arts Commission grant programs that support arts activities in urban and rural areas, preserve rich traditions of Arizona’s communities, impact student learning, and encourage participation in the arts by people of all ages and abilities.

Educational Enrichment Foundation

The Educational Enrichment Foundation (EEF) is an independent non-profit organization whose purpose is to develop community support for public education and for the children and youth in the Tucson Unified School District. Their mission is to provide resources to enhance and enrich student learning in the Tucson Unified School District. Their Classroom Grants program fund teacher-initiated projects that enhance classroom experiences, stimulate interest in learning, and explore concepts, ideas, and principles beyond the core curriculum. Requests for EEF Classroom Grants must clearly articulate a project’s learning goals and the assessment of the successful completion of these goals.
