Drs. Helen and John Schaefer Receive TPAC Lumies Arts & Business Award

The Tucson Pima Arts Council recently announced the 2013 winners of its prestigious Lumies Arts & Business Awards. Drs. Helen and John Schaefer were recognized with the Arts Patron Award. Now in its 12th year, the Lumies recognize the many talented individuals, groups and businesses that contribute to making Southern Arizona a wellspring of creative vitality.

For 50 years, Helen and John Schaefer have dedicated themselves to the cultivation and support of the arts in Tucson. They have volunteered their time on numerous boards of directors and have made significant financial contributions to create new works, preserve arts and culture archives, and make the experience of art available to all. At the University of Arizona they played a significant role in developing two world-renowned arts centers: the Center for Creative Photography (in the John P. Schaefer Building) and the UA Poetry Center’s landmark building (the Helen S. Schaefer Building). Their extraordinary service to the arts and their generous, sustained gifts to Tucson’s many arts organizations are worthy of recognition.

Held this past Friday, June 7th, at El Casino Ballroom, the Lumiesalso honored Borderlands Theatre director Barclay Goldsmith with an Artist Lifetime Achievement Award, Arizona Daily Star cartoonist and columnist David Fitzsimmons with the Established Artist Award, and Pan Left Productions with the Established Arts Organization Award.  For a complete list of award winners please visit www.tucsonpimaartscouncil.org.
