Introduction to Poetry Writing

10/29/2011 - 12/10/2011

with Sarah Kortemeier
Saturdays, October 29 through December 10, 12 noon – 2 p.m.
(no class on November 26)

This workshop will explore the basics of poetic craft in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. We’ll treat each course meeting as a mini-seminar on a specific element of craft (such as line, voice, and music), and we’ll read, write, and discuss poetry in a variety of styles. Along the way, we’ll read work by established poets such as Elizabeth Bishop, Li-Young Lee, Jorie Graham, John Ashbery, and others, along with a number of emerging poets we’ll discover together as we make use of the Poetry Center’s library collection. Preparation for each class will include some reading and a writing exercise; class meetings will feature discussion of the reading material, in-class writing, and opportunities to share and contribute feedback on new work. Participants will finish the course with a body of new writing, increased levels of comfort with the workshop model, and familiarity with a diverse set of poetic aesthetics.
