Señores, vengo a contarles
La historia de un amiguito,
Un juguete quería el niño
Cuando cumplió cinco añitos,
Él estaba muy enfermo
Nunca tuvo un hermanito.

Su madre no tenía dinero
Pues eran muy pobrecitos,
Ella cada día pensaba
Cómo dar gusto a su hijo,
Y una mañana salió
Dejando dormido al niño,
Quería darle una sorpresa
Y conseguirle un juguetito.

Cuando la madre volvió
Todavía estaba acostadito,
Trató de despertarlo
Pero no se movía el niño,
La madre desesperada
Tiró el juguete de su hijo,
Pero pasaron las horas y
El niño quedó dormido.

Pasó noches y días
Encerrada con su niño,
Cada mañana decía
“Dios mío, ¡despierta a mi hijo!”

Un vecino se dio cuenta
Y llamó a la policía,
Se lo querían quitar
Pero ella no soltaba al niño,
Muy despacito decía
“Sólo quería darle su juguetito”.

Yo aquí me despido
Recordando a mi amiguito.

Eternal Slumber

My friends, I come to sing you
The song of a little boy,
When he turned five years old
He asked to have a toy.
My little friend was an only child,
A gentle, sickly boy.

His mother had no money,
Their house was very bare,
But every day she tried
To show him that she cared.
One morning when she left the house
While sleep had closed his eyes,
She planned to buy him just one toy
To give him a surprise.

When she came back home
He was still asleep in bed,
Though she tried to wake him up
He didn’t even move his head.
Desperate and frightened
She threw aside his toy,
But hours went by and she could not
Wake up her little boy.

Days and nights she spent
Locked up inside the house,
Praying every morning, “God,
Please wake my baby now!”

Her neighbor called the police
And they broke down the door,
They tried to take him from her
But she held on even more:
“I only want to give him his toy
To bring his life a little joy.”

And now my song is at an end
I remember you, my little friend.
