Su nombre era Gustavo,
De su peso era el mejor.
Él es nacido en Nogales,
Pero no lo hagan menor.

Decían que era muy macho,
Que como él no había dos.
Hasta que se encontró a Pancho,
El matador de Tucson.

La pelea estaba puesta,
Era el enero 2.
Gustavo no sentía miedo,
Tenía mucho corazón.

El día de la pelea,
Gustavo se accidentó.
Un hombro dislocado,
Y a su chofer se mató.

Esto a mí no me para,
Dijo Gustavo enojado.
Llévenme ahora al ring,
Yo nunca me he rajado.

Le vendaron el hombro,
Y le dieron consejos.
Hizo una oración,
Y al ring salió con aplausos.

Para el segundo round
Gustavo ya no aguantaba,
Pero con todo y dolor,
Él no se quejaba.
Tenía la sangre de un gallo,
Y la energía de un caballo.

Los rounds fueron muy reñidos
Ni uno de los dos se dejó,
Quién ganó no se sabía,
Los dos eran muy buenos.
Y pa’ sorpresa de todos,
Gustavo fue el triunfante del día.

Gustavo the Boxer

Gustavo was his name,
And he won every round.
He was born in Nogales,
But don’t you put him down.

They said he was the man,
They said he was the max.
Only Pancho, Tucson’s “Matador,”
Could stop him in his tracks.

The fight was all arranged
For January 2.
Gustavo never feared,
His heart was brave and true.

But on the very day,
An hour before the match,
He dislocated his shoulder
In a terrible car crash.

Nothing can keep me away,
Said Gustavo with a frown.
Just get me to the ring,
You know I won’t back down.

They bandaged up his shoulder,
He said a prayer out loud.
And as he entered the ring,
He heard the cheering crowd.

At the end of the second round
In spite of all the pain,
Although he could barely stand,
He never once complained.
As strong as a horse,
He fought with all his force.

The rounds were fast and furious,
And neither one gave in.
Both of them fought so hard,
No one knew who would win.
But when the match was done,
Gustavo was the one!
